CHARLOTTE – The 2021 football season continues with week five action as the cream of the CIAA crop begins to rise to the top. The final week of cross-divisional takes center stage before divisional play kicks off next week. Several teams across the CIAA look to make a statement as they set their sights on making a run to the conference title game and possibly the Division II playoffs.
Let’s examine how each team fared in this second week of conference play:
Shaw 27, Virgina Union 7
Shaw won their third straight game with a 27-7 win over Virginia Union on the road. The Bears jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first half thanks to a one-yard scoring run by Andre Brandon, Jr. late in the first quarter that was followed by a nine-yard touchdown pass by Christian Peters to Ty Roberts just before the half. Coming into the week as one of the top rushing attacks in the CIAA, Shaw added 199 yards on the ground to their season total that included 78 yards and a score from Sidney Gibbs along with 61 yards from Brandon. VUU’s only score of the game came on a one-yard run from Jada Byers, who ran for 67 yards on 18 carries. Panther defender Domantay Rhem led all tacklers with 11 stops, including nine solos, while Shaw’s Devon Hunt delivered seven solo tackles with three coming behind the line of scrimmage and a sack. The Bears will host division foe Fayetteville State next week in a game that could have postseason implications.

Elizabeth City State 19, Livingstone 13
Elizabeth City State remained undefeated in conference play with a 19-13 win over winless Livingstone at home. Kevin Caldwell threw a pair of touchdowns in the first half, including a 39-yarder to Cameron Saunders, to help the Vikings take a 19-2 lead into the half. The Blue Bears would make things interesting in the second half with 11 unanswered points that included a 69-yard scoring pass from Lazarus Anderson to Lasirton Bryant early in the fourth quarter, but ECSU defender Taeyonn Reynolds picked off Anderson with 1:52 left to play to secure the win. Caldwell threw for 142 yards, including 85 yards to Saunders, and two scores while Melvin Smalls, Jr. rushed 67 yards for the Vikings. Despite the loss, LC got a strong effort from running back Tecory Tutson, who rushed for a game-high 110 yards on 20 carries while teammate Jaden Echols finished with a game-high nine tackles, including seven solos. Reynolds led ECSU with eight tackles of his own with seven being solo and also recorded two interceptions.

#20 Bowie State 44, Johnson C. Smith 7
Nationally-ranked Bowie State delivered a complete game on both sides of the ball as they defeated Johnson C. Smith 44-7 on homecoming for their 15th consecutive conference win, including the postseason, dating back to 2018. Bulldog signal-caller Ja’rome Johnson completed 13 of 22 passes for 227 yards and four touchdowns while running back Calil Wilkins rushed for 120 yards on 13 carries and a score. JCSU quarterback Ollie Sheperd found Reggie Bryant for 19 yards to provide the Golden Bulls’ only touchdown of the game. Despite that score, the BSU defense remained dominant as they held JCSU to just 164 yards of total offense led by All-Americans Joshua Pryor and Demetri Morsell, who both had five tackles for the game. JCSU defender Tywann Jackson had a game-high six tackles, including two for loss. BSU’s win sets up a big conference showdown next week that could have postseason implications as they take on undefeated Chowan. The Hawks were the last CIAA team to defeat the Bulldogs with a 42-23 win nearly three years ago.

Virginia State 33, Saint Augustine’s 9
Virginia State got their first win of the season with 33-9 victory over Saint Augustine’s. With the game tied at 9, VSU delivered a five-play, 48-yard drive just before the half that was capped off by 23-yard scoring pass from DVonte Waller to Roy Jackson, III to take a seven-point lead into the half. The Trojans would then hold SAU scoreless in the second half while running off 17 unanswered points that included a 66-yard touchdown run by Toure Wallace. Waller threw for a game-high 232 yards while Wallace led all rushers with 66 yards on the ground. SAU quarterback Christopher Perkins led the Falcons on offense with 120 yards passing and a team-high 53 yards on 14 carries while running back Keyshown Lindsey also delivered a two-yard scoring run. Falcons linebacker Lee Sales had a game-high 11 tackles, including four solos, while VSU got a team-high seven tackles from Kolby Hunter and two sacks from All-CIAA defensive lineman Javon Frazier.

Chowan 73, Winston-Salem State 7
Chowan left no doubt about the outcome of this week’s game as they routed Winston-Salem State 73-7 at home to move to 5-0. Off to their best start since 1980, the Hawks got another MVP-caliber performance from quarterback Bryce Witt, who passed for 423 yards on 36 completions and accounted for eight total touchdowns (five passing, three rushing) for the second consecutive week. The Hawks prolific offense scored on their first 10 possessions of the game that included nine touchdowns while the defense gave up just seven points and 131 yards of total offense. CU running back Jaylon Boyd rushed for 101 yards and two scores on 13 carries while receiver Laurence King had a game-high nine catches for 126 yards and a score and teammate Malik Tobias had 96 yards receiving and three touchdowns. WSSU’s lone score came on a blocked punt that was returned 12 yards by Angel Rivera late in the game while a game-high nine tackles from Elijah Banks was one of the few bright spots for the Rams defense. Gilberto Ortiz and Simeon Burns led the Hawks defense with seven tackles apiece while Issac Anderson had a game-high two and a half tackles for loss that included one and a half sacks. Chowan will get their biggest test of the season next week in a showdown against nationally-ranked Bowie State, which is a game that could quite possibly decide the CIAA Northern Division.

Fayetteville State 46, Lincoln (PA) 9
Fayetteville State easily handled Lincoln as they won convincingly, 46-9, at home against their cross-division opponent. The Broncos offense produced 450 yards of total offense that included 281 yards passing from K’hari Lane, who also threw for three touchdowns, and 79 yards rushing courtesy of running back Donshel Jetton. The FSU defense, which held the Lions to just 92 yards of total offense, got two tackles and a pair of interceptions from Brandon Barnes-Brown, one of which he returned 35 yards for a score. The Lincoln defense delivered a few bright spots as Roosevelt Jordan had a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solos, and Andre Williams picked off a Lane pass and returned it 70 yards for a score. It was the Lions fifth straight game with an interception and their seventh of the season. FSU kicker Elton Andrew was a key cog on special teams as he nailed four field goals for the game. The Broncos face a big test next week against Shaw in a key battle in the CIAA Southern Divsion race.
